Bodegas Terras Gauda, S.A. - Spain
Founded in 1990, Bodegas Terras Gauda winery is located in the far southwestern corner of the Spanish province of Pontevedra, Galicia, in the O Rosal Valley, bordering on Portugal.
The winery’s philosophy is essentially that of making singular wines with their own identity within the always-required premium quality.
To this end, we set the following as main aspects we expect of ourselves:
- Continual caretaking and supervision of the vineyard throughout its vegetative cycle.
- Separate winemaking for all varieties.
- Fermentation with our ecotypical yeasts isolated and selected from our own vineyard.
We combine tradition and scientific-technological advances just right in the winemaking process. We make white wines from noble varieties within the Rías Baixas Designation of Origin, one of the five Designations of Origin in Galicia. The Rías Baixas Designation of Origin currently encompasses more than 200 wineries, amongst which Bodegas Terras Gauda is, as a private company, the number one in volume.
Since Terras Gauda was founded, the founding partners were eager in their intent to focus on the O Rosal wines, characterized by a coupage blending three varieties.
Bodegas Terras Gauda has made its advances in the field of research compatible with its nationwide and international expansion. It is currently marketing 1.5 million bottles of wine annually on more than 50 national and international markets worldwide. A step in the search for high standards of quality products has led us to be the first winery in Galicia in obtaining quality certification to ISO 9001 for the cultivation and harvesting activities of vineyards and the development and marketing of our wines, spirits and liqueurs.
In 1992 he produced the first wine from our wine varietal Albariño, San Campio Abbey. In 1993 we began to develop the Terras Gauda Black Label, the first wine from DO Rias Baixas barrel fermented and aged on its lees, in the search for a wine that also show the characteristics of our varieties, to offer the subtle wood contributions. In early 2011 we present La Mar, the first wine made mostly with Caiño White. A world that in addition to allowing us to enjoy the subtlety and strength of this native variety of O Rosal valley, marked the final achievement Caiño preservation, about to disappear from the landscape wine.
Role in FOODIE
Terras Gauda will provide within the Spanish pilot their vineyard of 60 hectares, divided into parcels with differentiated orientation topography, elevation and slope, climatic and soil composition and structure. The knowledge of each parcel or subparcel allow proper deployment of sensors to monitor the weather conditions ahead of a precision viticulture. Expert staff will install the network first and then evaluate real-time measurements. Terras Gauda will also contribute modelling the knowledge to find the theoretical effect of weather conditions on the health of the crops and to make in-field contrast of the results, in order to evaluate and validate the Spanish pilot. Finally, once validated the sensor network, their measurements and the modelled knowlege, Terras will contribute to test diferentiated vineyard management tailored to the particular characteristics of each area, one of the services provided by FOODIE.
